The first oil painting exhibition in Japan was held in a freak show tent in the grounds of Sensoji Temple. At the time, Asakusa was the most vibrant area in Japan, and the birthplace of new culture. Unfortunately, no paintings from that time remain, but we have thoroughly researched the few remaining documents and recreated the show tent. Enjoy cutting-edge paintings from a time in 1874, when the word “art” had just been coined.
